My approach to bluegrass guitar and singing has evolved informally since I picked up an acoustic guitar for the first time in the late 1990s. I grew up in the ‘70s listening to rock, but somehow stumbled onto bluegrass in my mid-20s. I have come to appreciate the complexity and history the music and its purveyors offer, and have come to regard bluegrass as a music that is at once pure, powerful, and starkly beautiful.
Bluegrass is a language; it’s a way of communicating deep emotion and human experience. The music is a shared domain—those who are drawn to it find instant common ground. At festivals and jams, ordinary folks can explore the “ancient tones” and exchange musical and emotional ideas with people they’ve known for minutes. What is most relevant is that each time this happens, something new is created. The bluegrass landscape changes ever so slightly, and the power and brilliance of the music are perpetuated once more.
Playing with Two Hearted has given me the opportunity to connect with kindred spirits and create something that is our own. Each time we play, we try to pick up where we left off, and build a little bit on the music as we left it. The music presents constant challenges and has been a source of inspiration and fun. Bluegrass speaks to us, and I hope our brand of bluegrass speaks to you. Feel free to contact John at jg@twohearted.com.
